The thunder rolls, and the lightning strikes! When the lights go down in the city…that’s the night that the lights went out in Westbrook! If you haven’t guessed by now, week 8 brought on quite a storm, which I will get to in a bit.

This week we did Chapter 6B, Skin Physiology. As I mentioned a while back, this chapter is NOT actually split into two sections in our book but they choose to do it this way because there is a lot of information to take in. This chapter is chock-full of information ranging from the names of the layers of skin & their functions, to a variety of skin diseases. Chemistry was a rough chapter for me, I may have told you that, but this chapter really had me worried.  Nevertheless, we read through it in class on Tuesday, tested out on Wednesday, and I got a 100!

Our practical lesson for the week was aromatherapy and reflexology. These are things that you can add on to services in a salon. For example, if you were to have a client come in for a pedicure and you could see the stress they were under, you could offer a reflexology session to relieve some of that stress. Along with this, you could offer to place a few drops of lavender essential oil into their pedi bath to also help relax them.

Most states do not require you to carry a license to practice reflexology, so this is something you can add to your salon without extra schooling. However, it is recommended that you take a class if one is offered because there are certain things that should be avoided when doing reflexology- like practicing on a pregnant woman because it could send her into premature labor.

Aromatherapy uses essential oils and other natural extracts to aid in the healing of people emotionally and (as some believe) physically as well. Aromatherapists use different combinations or methods (massage, inhalation, etc.) to achieve the desired result.

So, as I mentioned at the beginning of this post, there was a big storm a’ brewin’! Let me just say that it seems for the last several weeks there has chronically been some kind of a storm on Wednesday nights. Lightning, pouring rain, just a big mess. The parking lot was under a few inches of water. Well this night, the lightening was so bad it hit every couple of minutes and it lit up our room a bright blue. The room we have class in has a big wall of windows, so when the glass started to do the wave we began to worry. Suddenly the lights went out and it was PITCH BLACK. I screamed like a little girl. It was a little embarrassing.

Half of the lights came back on after a few seconds. What was strange though, aside from only having half of the lights, was that the lights that were off kept coming back on every 2 minutes, and then going back out. The clinic (salon) had lights, but if the lights that were flicking went off, there was no electricity for the blow dryers, curling irons, etc. Needless to say we left a bit early that night. The rain had stopped when we were all going to our cars but it’s pretty scary when you are going to your car carrying a big METAL case and there is a huge flash of lightening! The power was restored that night and we had clinic the next day. What a week! ‘Till next time! -Amie
