Nail Artist Q&A: "Nailed Down!" with Chelsea Baart
Welcome to NAILPRO's NAILED DOWN where we “nail down” the details of selected nail design artists from our User Galleries.
This week we visit Victoria, British Columbia, Canada.
Meet Chelsea Baart:
Where do you work?
I am the owner of Chelsea's Nails in Brentwood Bay, BC. I am also an O.P.I. Educator.
How would you describe yourself?
I would describe myself as fun-loving, friendly, talkative, creative and a bit of a perfectionist. I love what I do. There's nothing better than seeing the delight on my clients' faces after they see what I've created for them.
Tell us about how you got started in the nail industry.
A friend of mine was taking the Nail Technician course at a local beauty school and I was her model. I was immediately hooked and signed up for the course shortly thereafter. I became a certified Nail Technician in 2002 and have recently been working from my home with plans to expand to my own salon.
What/Who inspires your work?
I take inspiration from everything: books, movies, fashion, etc. And, of course, I take it from all the other amazing Nail Technicians around the world. It always amazes me how incredibly talented and diverse our industry is.
Are there any tool(s) you can't live without?
My collection of O.P.I Acrylic and Gel brushes.
Do you have a favorite technique or style?
It's so hard to choose. I love anything that challenges me and makes my clients happy. Currently, I'm in love with the one stroke painting technique and am practicing it when I can.
What is your craziest/funniest nail story?
I have a client with a 3 year-old daughter who tells random strangers "Chelsea does my mommy's nails." She plays "nail salon" at home with her older sister and they fight over who gets to be "Chelsea." It's such an honor to be idolized like that!
What tip can you offer to other nail technicians?
Don't be afraid to step out of your comfort zone. Try everything once. You never know what you're capable of until you try. And don't assume your clients won't go for a certain style or technique. They'll always surprise you!
Would you like to be featured in NAILED DOWN? Post images of your nail art to our User Gallery. We'll be highlighting outstanding artists based on those submissions! (minimum six pictures to qualify for consideration) NAILPRO reserves the right to edit submissions for length, grammar and clarity.
