Natural Beauty
Although her character on the ABC sitcom Ugly Betty is known for being an ordinary girl who is a bit awkward and fashion-challenged, America Ferrera was anything but that when she showed up at the 66th Annual Golden Globe Awards in January. Nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series: Musical or Comedy, Ferrera looked stunning in a custom-made dress by Oscar de la Renta, gorgeous diamonds from Fred Leighton, Jimmy Choo heels and a beautiful manicure and pedicure provided by celebrity tech Jenna Hipp. To achieve a perfectly coordinated mani and pedi, Hipp painted SpaRitual creamy beige In the Buff lacquer on Ferrera’s fingernails and Orly International creamy pink Country Club Khaki on her toenails; the subtle shades allowed her natural beauty to shine.

In the Spotlight
The February 2009 issue of Elle magazine featured a story on Project Runway’s season five winner Leanne Marshall and her budding clothing line. The show’s winning model, Tia Shipman, showed off Marshall’s latest designs with the help of a magnificent manicure and pedicure from Zoya manicurist Jackie Saulsbery. Not only were the feminine fashions and beautiful nails captured in the magazine, but Saulsbery is also pictured next to Marshall at the shoot. That’s what we call giving nail techs the recognition they deserve! On top of that, Marshall was so impressed with the lacquer at the shoot that Saulsbery gave the designer a bottle of Zoya lacquer in Erin to take home!

Continued Success
The International Pedicure Association (IPA) is announcing plans for its reorganization and growth to ensure that they’re promoting and protecting the interests of the pedicure professional. The restructuring includes appointing a multi-discipline advisory board. Although IPA founder and director Dr. Dennis Arnold passed away in late 2008, his wish for the organization was to have it grow and prosper. The mandate of the new leadership is to continue his vision by making a positive and significant difference in the pedicure industry. “We promise to make available to every pedicurist, the proper education and the necessary tools to do their job in a safe and health-conscious manner,” says Linda Bond, executive director of the IPA. “By raising the bar of industry standards, our members will have the confidence that their reputation as an elite pedicurist will be recognized and valued by their clients and their peers.” For more information, visit pedicureassociation.org.

New Approach
To up the nail ante at the 2009 International Salon and Spa Expo in Long Beach, California, Le Chat had the innovative idea to hold an eye-catching event for showgoers to participate in at their booth—a Masquerade Nail Fashion Show. Jackie Troung, education director for Le Chat, explained that nail booths tend to be low key in comparison to the hair booths at trade shows, but with their nail fashion show they hoped to spark a new vitality and interest in the nail industry—and that they did.

Attendees were captivated, as three models strutted down the Le Chat stage and across the show floor flaunting their stunningly creative nail art. With each model wearing a different theme—Asian culture, spring/summer, and a black and white combo—attendees were able to see what can be created with Le Chat products. As a result, throngs of interested nail techs watched skilled educators do a multitude of demonstrations at the booth. “Overall it was a great event for us as well as for all the attendees,” said Troung. Due to the success of the event, Le Chat plans to hold more events like this, so be sure to check out their booth at the next show.

An All Inclusive Name
After 24 years of business, The Nailco Group officially changed its name in January to tng worldwide. Founded in 1985 as Nailco Manicurist Centers, the company has grown by leaps and bounds. Larry Gaynor, founder, president and CEO of tng worldwide, decided to change the name in an effort to bring all of the various divisions together under one roof, name and brand identity. Gaynor says, “What better timing than the present to bring all of our collective efforts over the past 24 years into a brand new company name and logo.” Along with the new name and logo, tng worldwide has updated thebeautybook for 2009 and implemented a new loyalty program for customers called Nailco Gold.

Fierce Competition
For 23 years, Japanese Nailist Association member Yoshio Mizuno has encouraged nail artists to travel with him from Japan to the U.S. to compete in nail competitions. This year proved no different, as he brought 25 competitors to the Nailpro Competition at the 2009 International Salon and Spa Expo in Long Beach, California, where he was also a judge. Well-known in the industry and recognized as a celebrity in Japan, Mizuno said that this year the competition was even better than years past because of the reduced time limit (the competition was shortened by 30 minutes), which requires a higher skill level. He also said that his favorite part of competitions is seeing how hard techs work and how they practice every day to reach their goals. Congratulations to Mizuno and his competitors for a beautiful performance at this year’s competition! —Courtney Roach

A Family Mourns
Zvi Ryzman, owner and president of Los Angeles-based American International Industries (AII) regretfully announced the passing of his father, Rabbi Yehoshua Heshel Ryzman, in Tel Aviv, Israel, on January 6. While the Ryzman family mourns the loss of their beloved patriarch, they also remember and celebrate a life well-lived.

Rabbi Ryzman’s funeral was a testament to the impact he had on his family, friends and community. From Tel Aviv, the Rabbi’s grandson, Elie Ryzman wrote to his colleagues at AII to describe the great outpouring of grief, support and love, which was shown by streets being closed off as 800 to 900 people waited for a chance to pay their respects. Elie Ryzman says, “The throngs of well-wishers continue to come, each with their own story and impression. The stories are numerous, the memories are boundless and the pain is endless.”

Rabbi Ryzman also “reveled in the pursuit that AII has undertaken to become a meaningful company in our industry,” explains Elie Ryzman. “His face would light up when I described the factory, the travels, the shows, the successes and even the failures. Even as his health deteriorated, he lived vicariously at AII headquarters through our reports and stories. I have no doubt that he is looking down from heaven smiling as he sees his legacy continue through everyone at AII.”

A Valued Employee
Creative Nail Design presents the Mary Nordstrom Award to the CND employee who, over the course of the year, has most embodied the true spirit of beloved matriarch Mary Nordstrom. The Fifth Annual Mary Nordstrom Award for 2008 was given to research chemist Thong Vu. He made a lasting impact with his enthusiasm, dedication to his work and ability to cultivate camaraderie among coworkers.

Business in Taiwan
This past November, NSI traveled to Taiwan to visit its distributors and conduct a training event. Company president Rick Slack met with his distribution partners to discuss the growing business in Taiwan and other parts of Asia. Risé Carter, national director of sales and education for NSI, then worked with 17 educators from sub-distributors in Taiwan on techniques using the Attraction Acrylic System, Technailcolor Colored Acrylics, Balance UV Gel System and Balance Color Gels. “I was extremely impressed with how prepared the educators were. Everyone studied their manuals prior to my arrival. Their preparation made this one of the most successful educator trainings I have done in years,” said Carter. All 17 educators passed the assessment and five were awarded a certificate of NSI Specialist, the second highest ranking for an NSI educator. The training concluded with a demonstration by Carter for over 75 local salon owners and nail technicians.
